We at Kudoboard recognize that showing appreciation for others is a whole lot easier when you are feeling appreciated yourself. That can be tough in December, a very stressful time for many of us as we confront the pressure to spend lots of money, entertain family, and pretend we like those Christmas carols. Before your anxiety and stress cause you to crash, try the following eight activities. Treat yo’self so you can treat others.
- Take a warm bath. Don’t forget the bubbles and candles—you’ve got to do it right. Read a book if that’s your thing, watch your favorite show (guilty pleasure shows are great too, this is your time!), practice some meditation, whatever gets you relaxed.
- Get some fresh air. Go for a walk. Nothing clears the mind like the great outdoors, and your body will appreciate the endorphins.
- Indulge in your favorite dessert(s). It’s okay to eat that whole pint of Ben & Jerry’s. It’s for therapeutic purposes, right?
- Buy that handbag or gadget you’ve been wanting. Sometimes a little retail therapy is all you need to bring up your mood and make you feel special. Don’t feel guilty about it, especially if you never buy anything for yourself.
- Practice mindful meditation. AHMMMMMMMMMM. Breathe in, breath out. Pair it with some gentle yoga or stretching, and you’ll be feeling relaxed in no time.
- Binge on your favorite Netflix show. Don’t feel guilty. A whole season of House of Cards? Yeah, what about it…Remember, once in a while it’s okay to binge and not feel bad about it!
- Meet up for drinks or dinner with friends. Chat with your pals and throw back a couple martinis/beers while you’re at it. If you’re not into drinking, meet for dinner or appetizers. Just get together with friends that will lift you up and make you laugh.
- Have your house cleaned. Nothing is better than sitting in a clean house and relaxing. Well, the only thing that would be better is if you didn’t have to clean it! If your budget allows, hire a cleaner and relax in a clean house (even if it’s just once a quarter). You won’t regret it!
These tips may seem trivial, but don’t underestimate the power of the little things. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so find the time and money (if necessary) to treat yo’self and take a break. We all deserve a little me time and everyone will benefit.
